PROJECT 2: BASIC ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWINGS USING DAILY OBJECTS

INTRODUCTION

This project introduces us to the importance of technical drawings in the built environment and how drawing conventions and calculation is used in the field. We are expose to the understanding of the relationship of key people in built environment and how orthographic drawings act as the common communication tools in this field.

THE PROCESS

First, we are required to choose an object within A5 size-base. It should not be too small/nothing bigger than A5 and must have certain level of complexity. So, I chose measuring tape as my object and get approval from Ms Iffa.

I faced a few problems in measuring my object, the measuring tape as it is covered with rubber hence the elasticity of rubber cause the measurement or distance between each column is different. Furthermore, it is an old measuring tape which we have remove the rubber tape covering it a few times before to repair it and due to some external reasons such as heat etc, the rubber is somehow "out of shape" a bit.

Hence, my weekly progress is delayed and stucked at the top view and elevation view for the first few weeks. But luckily, with guidance from tutors, I can understand better on how to solve these problems.

On the first week, we are required to sketch the objects without following the scales.
On the consequent week, I started to conduct measurement of measuring tape. We need to draw according to scale 1:1. The top view and elevation view This is to be done as part of the weekly progress.
We should take as much measurements and any related information on the selected object.
Through the guidance of our tutors and lecture given by our lecturers, we started to have insights on basic orthographic drawings and applied it into our drawings.

The required drawings are top view, 3 Elevations (Front/Back/Side/Bottom), 1 Section, 2 detail drawings and 1 Perspective view. The perspective view will be the cover of the submission. I decided to colour it using  watercolour.

After all drawings are completed, I composed it in a booklet (accordion style) using A2 paper and the writings used is Architecture Writing.

This is my first experience to draw using professional tools such as T-square and set squares to produce orthographic drawing. It was a great learning process!

Throughout this project, I really learned a lot and I am very grateful to have tutors with great patience to explain to us with the techniques to draw the selected objects as most of us are having different objects with us. Hence, it may required different guidance from our tutors such as how to measure it more accurately.

* I will update with progress drawings once I get my assignment.

We have to learn the ability to translate information to 2D drawings with clarity and presentation of information through drawings. Hence with some guidance from our tutors, I also learnt to have my own initiative and motivation to do the drawing. This is the first time I have been exposed to the correct method of drawing technical drawing. It is totally different from normal sketches that we are used to.

It is really helpful to us as as we proceed to degree program this drawing skill is a prerequisite to produce drawings of our design. This knowledge built up our strong foundation in drawing.

The drawing also trained us to be patience and more detailed in our drawing. The importance of detail in a drawing will define the clarity and quality of drawing. I also learnt to have self-discipline on producing weekly progress.
