PROJECT 1A - SKETCH JOURNAL PAMPHLET

INTRODUCTION

This is the first project for us to learn knowledge on constructed landscape. Through sketching and on site observation, we will learn basic graphic communication in landscape architecture and the process of visual thinking skills. We are divided into groups of 10 which is assigned to different site. Our site is Perdana Botanical Garden.

THE PROCESS

We are required to produce a sketch journal pamphlet of your site which comprises of an illustrative touring map and a series of landscape elements. The visual map will show the journey in our site. The map is to present with visuals in a combination of 2D and 3D.

We also need to choose 5 different places and choose the softscape and hardscape elements and provide with top view, elevation and shape of the leaf for softscape and top view and elevation view for hardscape.

We went to our site together and we were truly amazed by the scenery in Perdana Botanical Garden. We never thought that Malaysia has a garden which comprises so many plant species and it is indeed a very well-maintained park.

All of us were so excited and took many photos during our visit. Hence, it is not difficult for us to find the 5 interesting places and we really enjoyed throughout the field trip.

When we went back from there,we started to organize the photos and sketch out the top view, elevation view of the softscape and hardscape elements. It is fun and improve our observational skills on nature and built environment in a garden which we always overlook and take for granted. The touring map also train our abilities on sketching out the places in 3D and learn on how to make an informative map for the tourists. Our organizing skill also being tested as we arrange the different elements in the pamphlet. I choose to use watercolour medium to colour the pamphlet and pen it out using felt tip pens.

THE SKETCH JOURNAL PAMPHLET

Through this project, I learnt to illustrate the the elevation, top view of the softscape and hardscape adequately. Besides, I also been exposed to different plant plan view symbols and learnt to recognize their difference. Research also needed to choose the right symbols and method of illustration. Knowledge on the basic hardscape name and softscape name with its function in a garden has been gained through this project too. Our lecturer also help and guide us through lectures and tutorial session which enable us to produce appropriate drawings.

.The quality of workmanship on the artwork is important in a sketch journal pamphlet as it will attract the tourist to further their reading and use it as a tool during their journey. Hence, the colouring process and sketching process is done carefully in order to create good graphic.
