Landscape Proposal for Park Visitor Centre with Orthographic Drawings

INTRODUCTION

According to the site given in Assignment 1B (Site Analysis), we are to propose a landscape design for a park visitor centre. Hence, there are two stages that we need to do which is stage 1 - conceptual design and stage 2 - design development.

Conceptual diagram is a detailed version of bubble diagram. All ideas in bubble diagram need to be converted to conceptual diagram (to overlay with base plan).

THE PROCESS - STAGE 1

THE PROCESS - STAGE 2

Maintain as the previous group, we are required to conduct a research on concept of the landscape design to be proposed at the site. We are encouraged to do further research on potential ( strength and opportunity) and constraints (weakness and threats). From these, we need to present a concept, improved on hardscape materials and softscape that are more suitable to the site. Ms Iffa stressed that we must respect the function and initial purpose of the park.

Besides, we need to propose the location of the park visitor centre at site. The size of the area is 25meter x 20meter. The proposed area is within the boundary line only ( our site Perdana Botanical Garden was divided into three parts and we get the part with the lake).

This stage is to help us better for our design development as we get to discuss among our group members to decide on the main design concept etc.

I was mainly in charged on conceptual diagram as this conceptual diagram was based on bubble diagram hence we organized the size of space according to its function and the location of it.

Bubble diagram is mainly a process to show spaces and activities that we want to propose.  Hence, we started with bubble diagram first. Our area is mainly divided into garden, building, welcoming area(entrance) and decking.

With frequent communication with our group leader JY, finally I get the map orientation and size of each spaces correctly.

We brainstormed on the design concept which we wanted to apply. We came to a common say that English Garden concept is the most suitable for our garden as we found many existing english garden hardscape there.

We need to draw according to scale that we prefer hence we choose the scale 1:75.

I learnt that group work is extremely important especially for a larger scale project. We can do better research and more appropriate information. To do the project more effectively, we have to distribute the task equally.

THE PROCESS - STAGE 2

Stage 2 is about design development and it is an individual work which consists of 40 marks in total. We have to propose a landscape design of a visitor park centre. The visitor park centre functions as the management office and information or activity centre to the park. By applying the group concept- English Garden 10 of us will use a total of 6 different design approach. I have been assigned with curvilinear approach.

We were very lucky to have our tutor Ms Iffa to teach us in detail of the rule of each approach and given us a basic measurements of the common elements in a garden. Our curvilinear design is more curvy and need to use French Curve to draw it. Its difficulties is to make it looks harmony and as one.

We need to use the guideline that we have proposed in our interim stage to design our spaces in this area but we can conduct some changes according to our approach.

All the drawings must be arranged according to the board composition that our tutor provided. It is indeed a challenging task for us as we need to produce 2 A1 boards in total. Most of the drawings are in the scale of 1:50.

We have to produce

Project Description, Location Plan, Key Plan , Schematic Plan, Master Plan, Elevation ,Sectional-Elevation, Hardscape Palette, Softscape Palette and Perspective.

The part that I found to be most time-consuming is my master plan as I am not used to use French Curve to make curvy lines. So, it is a very good experience for me to train myself to use it. The part that I found to be most time-consuming is my master plan as I am not used to use French Curve to make curvy lines. We have to produce:

Project Description, Location Plan, Key Plan , Schematic Plan, Master Plan, Elevation ,Sectional-Elevation, Hardscape Palette, Softscape Palette and Perspective.

Hence, it is important to produce master plan first so that we can do our sectional elevation and more according to it. This project actually trained us to imagine our park visitor center through the master plan and produce the related drawings.

Perspective drawing was according to the best view of our main area or feature. As a result, I chose the water fountain area as it has the strongest English garden elements characteristics and best represent the garden atmosphere through it.

I chose to colour my boards using watercolor as it is less time consuming for me.

FINAL PRESENTATION BOARDS

Through this project, I learnt that time management is very important and we have to follow strictly the timetable that our tutor suggest in order for us to finish it on time. We need to have clear understand on the project brief and in-depth research in order for us to have a good design proposed.

The ability to transfer the information from master plan into sectional elevation, perspective and elevation view requires us to visualize it in our mind before we draw on the boards. As I chose to colour it using watercolour, hence I need to started early as I have to redraw on the board but the satisfaction as we see the final outcome is worth it. Although it may not look as striking and vibrant colour as marker pen, but I like its colour value.

I am very grateful to have our tutor helping out throughout the process and gave me useful tips and help me to improve my design. Thanks Ms Iffa!
