Assignment 01 - Exploration of Design Elements & Principles, Compositions and Pattern

INTRODUCTION

The first assignment for this module is an individual assignment which help us to understand the basic elements and principles of design, compositions, pattern and shapes through photography, simple geometric manipulation drawings and simple implementation task.

THE PROCESS

Our lecturer, Ms Delliya Zain began this module with a brief lecture on this module and started giving us our first lecture on "Introduction to Design Elements, Principles & Composition", "Colour Theory" and more to help us better in completing this booklet. We were given a template to ease our work and compilation of booklet.

Basically, we need to take photographs which are 10 photos for elements (Set A), 10 photos for principles (Set B) and 10 photos composition (Set C). It was a fun process for me as we were given a few sites to choose and my friends and I decided to choose Taman Tasik Shah Alam as our site for us to take photos of design elements and principles that can be found in nature and built environments.

I became more aware to my surrounding after this project.

I also learnt on how to use tracing paper effectively. It provides diagrammatic description and annotation to the photos or artwork and help the viewers to understand clearly. Before this, I always created confusion by directly labelled on the photos etc.

Set D is about drawing motives and patterns using basic geometric patterns from basic geometric shapes by applying the theories that we learnt previously. It is to test whether we truly understand them or not.

I found out that it is actually not easy to create motives using equilateral shapes. There is many rules and regulations that we need to explore and learn from books.

Through this project, I learnt about the basic design elements, principles, composition etc. Knowing is a thing but applying or implementing it is another thing. To apply the theories that we learnt into our designs is important and it will help us to create a better design and the exploration of these elements did not stop here as it is actually an endless learning journey which grows more exciting.
